NOTES: Fairly hardy or borderline evergreen large shrub or small tree. Upright dense bushy growth. Leaves oval, leathery, glossy green. Flowers inconspicuous, yellow-green, May.

Preferred common name: New Zealand broadleaf

Griselinia are upright evergreen shrubs with simple, ovate leaves and tiny flowers, male and female on separate plants.

G. littoralis is a fast-growing large evergreen shrub with light green, broadly oval leaves. Flowers yellow-green, very small and inconspicuous, followed by purple fruits on female plants, where both sexes are grown together

Pests Generally pest free.

Diseases May be affected by a leaf spot.

Soil Acid, Alkaline or Neutral. Well-drained. Chalk, Clay, Loam or Sand.

Aspect West or South facing. Exposed or Sheltered.

Flowers: Green and Yellow in Spring.

Foliage: Pale Green.

  Hebe Red Edge

   

Fairly hardy evergreen small shrub. Rounded bushy growth. Leaves small, oval, grey-green edged with red. Flowers small, in large clusters, pale lilac, in June and July.

SEASON: Mid summer

TASK FOR APRIL: Lightly trim to shape with shears; cut back older plants almost to ground level.

Preferred common name: Hebe 'Red Edge'

  

Hebe are evergreen shrubs with paired, simple leaves and racemes or spikes of small, 4-lobed, tubular to salver-shaped flowers in summer and autumn.

'Red Edge' is a small evergreen shrub with oblong, blue-grey leaves which are margined with red, especially in winter. Flowers pale mauve fading to white, in short spikes.

  

Pests Can get aphids and tortrix moth.

Diseases A leaf spot and a downy mildew may be a problem.

  

Soil Alkaline or Neutral. Moist but well-drained or well-drained. Chalk, Clay, Loam or Sand.

Flowers: Pale Purple and White in Summer.
